Getting Ready to head south!!

Today was a pretty low-key day, I only had one class so I came home early and reread Slaughterhouse-Five. I am giving a presentation on the significance of the Firebombing of Dresden while my class is in Germany so I am talking about the cultural significance through this book. Other than that, I've just been getting ready for our trip to Germany! We leave tomorrow night and we'll be gone for 9 days! Our first stop is Dresden, then Weimar, Berlin, and finally Amsterdam!! I'm super excited b/c I love the people I'm traveling with so we'll DEFINITELY have a good time! I am making everyone go to the Berlin Zoo with me!!!!

Other than reading, I went to the gym, cooked/ate with my family! I am not bringing my computer on the study tour so I won't be able to post until AT LEAST next Monday (Mar 8th)! Never fear though, I will be back with some exciting stories and more sage words!!!

P.S. pics from Stockholm on photobucket!!!

Food Log:
Breakfast: muesli and yogurt
Lunch: rye bread, peanut butter, and cheese...I think Anne through away the lunchmeat...
Dinner: bean/squash soup, pretty okay, the beans weren't cooked all the way though :-(

Stockholm is FRIGGIN' cold!!!!

Hello my dear fans! I am sorry it has taken me 900 years to post, I have been a VERY busy girl!!!

As you may have guessed from the title, Stockholm was EXTREMELY cold!!! I just looked up the weather, it was -14 Cecilius while we are there, however it felt MUCH colder with the windchill (Stockholm is actually a series of islands so think Michigan Ave. in February type winds...). So, needless to say, we pretty much stayed inside as much as possible! We went to the Nordic Museum and the Vasa Museum. The Vasa was an extremely ornate, beautiful ship that was built to be the pride of the Swedish Navy under King Gustav around 1650. However, they screwed up with the amount of water in the ballast vs. ship weight and it sunk before it made it out of the Stockholm harbor! They found in in the 1950's, brought it up from the bottom, and have now preserved it and made an entire museum out of it! It was soooooo cool to see, I think like 94% of the ship is original which is really cool because not only is it from the 17th century, but it was also under water for 300 years!

The next day we went to Gamla Stan which is the old village in Stockholm. We went to the former Royal Palace (still a palace with guards and all that, but the Royal family has since moved to a different palace). At the palace we saw the changing of the guards and the royal jewels! We also went to a bunch of little shops and cafes in the village which was really nice. In Sweden, they have this thing called "Fika" which is like a coffee break. Fika can happen at any time and you have to go to a cafe and drink coffee and eat pastries. I won't tell you how many times we had Fika the first day, but it was more than 2...

The food in Sweden was really good! According to my best friend and secret lover Rick Steves, lunch is the meal to eat out in Stockholm and just do a picnic for dinner. So, we did just that! The first day my friend and I both had a traditional Swedish sandwich which was interesting, it was a big roll with lettuce, tomato, some kind of butter/shmear, and cheese. It sounds weird I know but it was actually very good! The second day I had of course, Swedish meatballs!!!! I cannot express in words how good they were, served with boiled potatoes, some sort of berry that starts with an L, and sweet pickled cucumbers (which I guess would just be a pickle, but they called them pickled cucumbers...). For dinner we did a baguette/cheese/fruit deal, quite good! For Fika we got to sample lots of pastries, including a Swedish bun that is kind of like a cinnamon roll but not, carrot cake, and muffins! Oh, and let us not forget the embarrassing amount of Swedish candy we ate too, cavity city here I come!

Our hostel in Sweden was very nice too, not right in the center of things but pretty close, nice little neighborhood too. We went to a bakery next to our hostel and the guy was so nice he was like a grandpa and gave us free cookies with our sandwiches! But ya, the hostel was clean, no creepers, secure lockers to put your stuff in, not too bad!

On my way back from the airport my train broke down so I actually had to take 4 different trains home. But, after a hectic night, I got home and CRASHED! Monday I got up early because I had to bake cookies for my host family, shovel the driveway and sidewalk, write a paper, and study for a philosophy midterm! Needless to say, Monday was a super stressful/busy day! Tuesday I went to all but 1 of my classes (I skipped the one right before philosophy so I could study) then took my midterm. It went pretty okay, he only gave us an hour and the test was waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too long (as in, everyone wrote 1 paragraph for the 3-4 pages essays) so I think he will be pretty lenient in grading. After the exam a bunch of people went out for dinner and then to a bar so that was a good time!

Today I was able to sleep in and then I had a field trip to Roskilde Cathedral. This is the most famous church in Denmark, built originally by Harold Bluetooth but redone throughout the years. The building standing today is over 800 years old. This is where all of the royals are buried. It was a really beautiful church however they are doing some construction/decorating so we really didn't get to see it in all of its splendor :-( After my field study I went home because I literally haven't seen my family since they got back from Egypt! Unfortunately my host brother has the flu so he has been in bed all day but I cooked/ate/caught up with my host parents which was really nice!

Tomorrow I only have 1 class so I'm looking forward to catching up on homework and sleep!

Food log:
Breakfast: muesli and yogurt and a banana
Lunch: pizza bread from 1 bakery, and then our Danish teacher bought us pastries from another bakery!
Dinner: pasta with a garlic/butter/mussel sauce (we have this dish quite often because it is really good and super easy/quick to make!

Pictures coming soonish!

Off to Sweden!!

Hey all!!

I just wanted to make a quick post, I know how everyone waits in breathless anticipation for my sage words on the successful conquering of Denmark!

Yesterday I accidentally bought a cake, which doesn't sound bad but it was! I went right home after my morning class so I could knock out some MAJOR homework before going to Stockholm but I decided that I needed a reward for choosing homework over the Carlsberg Factory (some of my friends invited me to go after class - 10am is an acceptable drinking time in Denmark) AND St. Peder's Bakery and the Black Diamond (another friend's invite, I would have done that but I didn't have any of my books) so I decided to go to the bakery near my house! I walked in, made a feeble attempt at ordering a piece of cake in Danish (Jeg vil gerne have en stykke kage - you try!) and then I was fishing out my coins while she was packaging it so I didn't really pay attention to what I was getting. SO, when I got home, I opened the box and discovered a pretty big cake that I DEFINITELY could not have eaten by myself (especially since I won't be here this weekend)! So, I invited 2 girls over to share my cake, they came over for a little while, we talked, did some homework, and of course ate LOTS of cake! After they left, I made dinner and studied for the rest of the night!

Today, I had class all morning, just got home, packed, am warming up leftovers from last night, and in an hour am leaving for beautiful Stockholm!!!! I'm super pumped because everyone says Stockholm is really young/hip but still really beautiful and historic (all this despite the fact that the Danes, SERIOUSLY look down on Sweden)! I miraculously packed everything including sheets and towels for the hostel into my backpack so I am pretty proud of myself!!!

I have also downloaded the latest version of "Museum Without Walls" to my ipod so I'll have a very enjoyable plane ride too!!!!! (P.S. once again, dedications show was AWESOME!!!!!)

I'm not bringing my comp to Sweden so I probably won't be posting for awhile, I get back Sunday and have to write a paper and study for my philosophy midterm both due Tuesday - joy!

For those of you following the Olympics, a dark cloud has descended upon us, Yevgeny Plushenko only got a silver medal last night in men's figure skating. But, take solace in the fact that a stupid piece of metal will never change the fact that he is truly the best figure skater that has ever lived!

Food Log:
Breakfast: Toast and marmalade
Lunch: Ham and Cheese sandwich with grapes and chips (don't tell Anne, I caved)
Dinner: Fish balls! (I made that and broccoli last night - way too much food for 1 person, I decided the fish balls would make better leftovers than broccoli...)

Sleepover!!!

Last night I had a sleepover at my house since my host family is on vacation in Egypt. It was a lot of fun and very chill, I made dinner (big shock: chicken caesar-pasta salad) and then we just hung out! We made chocolate chip cookies in honor of Fat Tuesday, watched the Olympics (they really only care about curling here since it is the only sport Denmark has ever won a medal in, so for most of the night curling was just on in the background), and talked about more travel plans!

We all decided to stay up until 1:30am when they would show the men's figure skating (as many of you know, I am obsessed with Yevgeny Plushenko so we HAD to watch) however it didn't come on until about 2:30! SO, we saw Yevgeny kick everyone's ass, and then we all crashed (and conveniently did NOT see Evan Lysacek come very close to Yevgeny's score). The next morning we woke up around 11, had a leisurely breakfast, and then everyone left because 1 girl had a study tour and another girl was going to a museum with her Danish roommate. The rest of the day I took it easy, went grocery shopping AGAIN, and did TONS of homework that I have been neglecting!

Tomorrow is going to be another pretty intense study day for me since I have 1 test Friday and 1 really hard test (Philosophy) Tuesday (which I have to study for before I leave for Stockholm for the weekend).

Food Log:
Breakfast: muesli, yogurt, coffee, chocolate chip cookies, fruit
Lunch: Leftover pasta salad
Dinner: Leftover pasta salad and buckeyes!

I weekenden!

Saturday night I went out to a couple bars with my friends from class which was a good time and then Sunday I just kind of hung out with the family. I went to the gym after I got up, cooked dinner with Anne, and then I went to bed pretty early (I didn't get much sleep Friday and Saturday) while my family packed for their vacation to Egypt!

This morning I woke up, bid farewell to my family for a week, uploaded 2375098590742398435 pictures to facebook and photobucket (note: new photos on photobucket), then went to the gym. I met with a personal trainer today so she could set up a program for me which was really good but she freaked when she met me because she said her English was very bad! But, we got along just fine, she showed me how to use all of the machines, how many reps to do etc. I'm really excited because it is an INTENSE program so I think it will be a lot of fun to do!!

After the gym I went grocery shopping (Peter gave me "the family fortune" so I could buy food for the week that they are gone) which is ALWAYS interesting! After 2 stores and 1.5 hours, I got the basics of what I needed and headed home! Then I had dinner (leftover chicken stir fry) and began my MOUNTAIN of homework!!! I also made buckeyes during my study break because I am having a sleepover tomorrow! I also was able to watch some Olympics which was nice because I LOVE the Olympics! It is not big at all here, especially considering that Denmark has only won 1 medal (1998, silver in curling) in winter Olympic history! I had to switch channels because they only cover so much on 1 channel before returning to regular programing, but I miraculously figured out how to use the TV so it's all good!

Tomorrow I have class all day and then the sleepover which should be lots o fun!

Food log:
Breakfast: Banana
Lunch: salmon smorrebrød
Dinner: leftover stir fry

I'm going to Spain and Italy!!!

Friday after classes my friends and I met up and firmed up our travel plans which is very exciting!!! The first week we will go from Berlin-Milan-Florence-Venice (we will only spend a couple hours in Milan, it was just the cheapest airport to fly into) then the second week we will be going to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville (maybe), and possibly a day trip to Toledo!! On our way home we will stop for dinner in Paris!!! Me and 1 other girl are getting Eurorail passes (which is why we can hit so many cities and have dinner in Paris) but another girl is flying because she is only traveling for the first week (then she is going to Russia with a class). I'm super pumped because although I will not see Rome which I really wanted to see, Spain and Italy will be AMAZING!

Friday night, after a quick dinner back home, we all met back up for our night of Danish fun!!! First we went to my friend's house b/c she lives in this cute little town with straw roofs to drink Carlsberg and play Danish board games (Monopoly in Danish is surprisingly difficult!) and then we started our long trek to Vega, a super famous nightclub here. UNFORTUNATELY, we got very lost going to Vega/I think we got the wrong address or directions because we couldn't find it, so then we just went to Heidi's Pub which is famous for having tons of different beers on tap! We spent most of the night there which was a lot of fun, and we left there at about 4:30am (which is apparently normal here). We really wanted to find a bakery so we could buy fresh pastries, but of course they weren't open so we settled for the next best (and I'm using the term "best" very loosely) thing, McDonald's French fries!

I finally got home around 6 and went straight to bed! I woke up around noon, had lunch with the fam, then went to work out at the local gym. It is a tiny facility but nice enough! The only problem is that of course all of the weights are in Kilos so I almost died when I nonchalantly grabbed the "16" weights (about 32lbs - too much for me!). After working out, I went home, showered, and we had dinner! Tonight I think I'm going out with the people from my study tour class!

Food Log:
Dinner Friday: Grilled cheese and bbq sauce (better than it sounds) - Anne and Peter were going to a concert for an 80s Danish pop band (so cool!) so I had to fend for myself!
Drunken snack Friday night: French Fries
Breakfast: muesli and yogurt
Lunch: smorrebrød with rye bread, salmon, eggs, and ham
Dinner: Salmon fillets with veggies and potatoes

Carlsberg semi-failure

Today I only had 1 class in the morning so I went to the black diamond again to study like a true Dane! After a couple of hours of studying my friend texted me and said that we were going to Carlsberg brewery! So, I packed up my books and met my friends back at DIS.

Before we headed to Carlsberg, we got the pastry of the day at our bakery (yes our bakery, we go there too often for it to not be ours). I don't know the name of the pastry we had but it was a flaky delicious croissant on the bottom with raspberry jelly/jam, LOTS of whipped cream, chocolate, chocolate chips, and more flaky croissant on top. Needless to say, it was so good it should be illegal. So, after we ate mad pastries, we headed to Carlsberg but by the time we got there the museum had closed (well it technically wasn't closed yet but we would not have been able to do the whole tour because it would take too long) so we just went to the bar for a beer (we legit walked for like an hour one way!) So I go up to the bar and ask the bartender/representative for Carlsberg brewery which beer I should get and he is like "uhh...regular Carlsberg" NOT! I was very displeased because everyone knows when you go to a brewery/someplace special YOU DON'T GET THE CHEAP BEER THAT THEY SERVE EVERYWHERE!!! So, I was like, forget this guy and got this special Ale and it was delicious (though not as good as the beer in Ribe). Needless to say, we'll have to go back to the factory another time for the tour and FREE beer!

After some beer and quality girl time, my friends and I headed home for dinner! Tonight everyone in my host family was all over the place so I just had some leftover stir fry (which I actually didn't have the first time b/c I wasn't there the night they made it) which was REALLY good! Because my host mom is lactose-intolerant they make a lot of things with coconut milk which adds a good and unique flavor to stuff (the other night we had pasta with a cream sauce but instead of half and half we used coconut milk).

The rest of the night will be homework, possibly TV, then early bedtime! Tomorrow my friends and I will be attempting yet another Danish tradition - partying all night and then going to the bakery for pastries right when they open - yay!!!

Food Log:
Breakfast: the usual
Lunch: FANTASTIC sandwich - I found dijon mustard in the fridge so now I can eat proper ham sandwiches!
Snack: Pastry from heaven
More snack: beer!
Dinner: stir fry

P.S. To answer mom's comment to the last post (b/c I don't think you read the answers to the comments I post as another comment), thanks for the recipes, I can do toll house - though do you know how important is it to use an actual beater thing, we don't have one here.
Also, I just went out with 5 people from my "core" class. This is the class we do the study tours with - it is technically my "major" here while my other classes like marine mammals, hans christian andersen, etc. are all "electives." We went to two very laid back bars which is nice. There are TONS of bars (and lots of clubs too but that isn't really my thing) so we never have a problem finding a place to just kick back and talk/relax. Nice atmosphere, not to loud/crowded/smokey - it's a good time!

Whale Bones!!!

Sorry I haven't written since Sunday, as it were, I haven't done much lately, but I seem to be very busy...

Monday = no class so I took the day to go to the Black Diamond which is the HUGE Royal Library in Copenhagen (and I think also the main library for U of Copenhagen, but there is a very real chance that I just made that up...) to do all of my homework for the week. It is a really nice place to study, it is a fairly new building but of course they decorated some of the study rooms to look like they are from Harry Potter (although other rooms are more modern). If there are any Cornellians out there in blog world, this library reminds me of a huge Mann Library with random rooms from Uris inside. But anyway, I tried out 3 different places to study (I like to change my scenery while I study, and I also wanted to multi-task and explore the library while still doing work) all of which were very nice, and QUIET (like most public places here - it is really true that Americans are more loud and obnoxious!). Obviously almost everyone in the library was Danish which was awesome, the guy at the next table started laughing at me when I pulled out my Danish for Beginners book and started practicing counting in Danish!

After my study session, I headed home to relax, cook, etc. - the normal family routine! I think we had pasta with mussels for dinner (soooo good, it is actually a recipe from a former host student!). I stayed up pretty late finishing my Philosophy homework, which by the way, sucks. Thank you Cornell for making me take this class, when I die, you can't come to my funeral!

Tuesday is my big class day, starting at 8:30am ending at 5:15pm. BUT after my last class I met up with a group of people from my core class (this is the class I travel with - western DK last weekend, Germany in 2ish weeks) and we went out for dinner then drinks. It was a good time, we ended up at this Italian restaurant which was good - our waiter of course had a cousin in Chicago, as most good Italians do! I had spaghetti carbonara, which is actually different than our carbonara, but still good. After that we went to 2 different bars and just hung out and talked/relived our glorious night in Ribe (and our not-so-glorious day after Ribe). We left around midnight because we all had to catch trains home, but the trains don't run very frequently at night so it actually took me like an hour and a half to get home :-(

This morning I was up bright and early for my field trip to the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen (part of U of Cph) with my marine mammals class. First we went down into the basement and saw MASSIVE, as in, bigger-than-my-house-massive whale skulls/skeletons. It was sooooooooooo interesting, you really cannot conceptualize how big these marine mammals are until you see a skeleton/animal up close - it is kind of scary but awesome! Then we went around and saw the behind-the-scenes collection of over 10 million different specimens housed at the museum (which by the way doubles as a research facility for zoologists/technicians from the University). They had tons of marine mammal bones, along with preserved mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, bugs, birds, etc. I got to touch a real (though now dead and stuffed) lion, which is cool because that is probably as close as I'll ever come to the real thing! We also got to explore the actual museum that is open to the public a little which was very nice too! I've found that most museums here are really interactive which is awesome because you are never going to really learn anything going to these museums unless you're actually engaged.

After the field trip I came home and took a nap, relaxed, did some homework, etc. until dinner. After dinner we watched this awards show on TV. It was HILARIOUS!!! It was kind of just general pop culture stuff (it didn't have a specific theme like the Grammys or Emmys). They did best artist, best song, best radio program, best sport moment, best commercial, best comedy show/act, etc. In between awards they had all these little skits which were a scream! One of them involved this guy attempting to steal one of the award statues so it was like a Matrix spoof and at the end he put an Oscar on the platform instead of the Danish award as a poke at Americans (I explained that really poorly - it was hilarious if you saw it...)

Food Log:
Breakfast: muesli (I've been spelling that word wrong the whole time, I think this is the correct spelling) and yogurt and COFFEE (though it was instant so it tasted horrible but I can't help it, I have a problem...
Lunch: peanut butter and boysenberry marmalade sandwich, mmm!
Dinner: Pasta with a coconut milk/shrimp/lemon grass sauce, DElicious (though I'm kind of getting pasta-ed out...)

P.S. Over dinner my host family told me how their last student always made this type of "cake" which was absolutely awful and they couldn't stand eating it but she said it was a super popular dessert in the US... it was Rice Krispie Treats!!! haha, scratch that one off the list of things to make!!!!

P.P.S. They then went on to express their undying love for choc. chip cookies - does anyone have a really really really good recipe that I can impress them with?

Western Denmark

I have made my triumphant return to beautiful Copenhagen after a whirlwind trip to Western Denmark (and the very Northern part of Germany). So, as I sit here listening to a FABULOUS radio program about the 46th Anniversary of the Beatles coming to the US, I will regale you with the tales from my first trip to continental Europe!

We started the trip bright and early in the morning on Thursday and headed to the border region between Denmark and Germany. This region is interesting because the land has gone from Germany to Denmark several times, the final border being drawn as part of Wilson's 14 points after World War I. As a result, this region of Denmark/Germany has kind of a confused identity with about 20,000 Germans living in Denmark and about 50,000 Danes living in Germany (however they are still Danish citizens, are assisted by the Danish government, covered by Danish national healthcare, etc. and vice versa).

Our first stop was to the battlefields of Dybbøl where in 1864 (while the Americans were busy with the Civil War) Germany CRUSHED the Danes and took approximately 1/3 of Denmark. This is an important battle for Denmark because this is the point where they became a "small nation" (to this day they very much identify with/take pride in being a small nation that has the ability to really take care of the people, i.e. as a welfare state). After that we headed across the border to Flensburg, Germany. We were there for approximately 40 minutes because we were running really late because of weather so we literally got out of the bus, did a super brief tour of the main street in Flensburg, and then got back on the bus and left!

After Germany we headed to Rødding to a Folkehøjskole to meet the students and stay the night. Folkehøjskoles only exist in Denmark and they are set up so after high school students can go there to take classes for fun (i.e. no exams, no papers, no real work) to figure out what they want to do with their life and to meet other Danes. Anyone over the age of 18 can go to a Folkehøjskole and there is no set amount of time you spend there (so theoretically you could be at one for the rest of your life). However, this is the only type of school that Danes have to pay for (the tuition is about $6,000 a semester which is outrageous for Danes - yeah right!). After we checked in to the Folkehøjskole we ate dinner in the cafeteria with the students, had a lecture about Danish history, the Folkehøjskole system, etc. and then hung out with the students.

The next morning we left to go to Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark. We spent all day in Ribe doing a Scavenger hunt and taking tours (Viking Museum, Cathedral, Monastery, and Brewery). The Brewery was a local microbrewery in the center of Ribe. It was actually very cool because the main brew-master is the Headmaster at the high school in Ribe and just does this on the side. So, we crowded into this tiny garage where they make the beer and he told us all about the beers. During the tour we could "help ourselves to as much beer as we want, but you must try all 5 beers" Translation: by the end of the tour everyone, including our professors, was pretty smashed! The beer was absolutely fabulous though, I don't really like dark beer but it was all really good! 70% of the beer they make is sold in Ribe but the other 30% is sold around Denmark so hopefully I'll be able to find it in Copenhagen! After the Brewery tour we had dinner with another European Culture and History class (they are going to Prague instead of Germany for their week-long study tour) and then we hit the bars to meet the locals! For a small town Ribe has plenty of bars (including 1 that has Karaoke bar) so I think everyone in our program had a pretty good time!

The next day we had breakfast at the hostel then left for Jelling. On the way, we stopped at the Vejen Kunst Museum which is known for their collection of Danish symbolism from the late 19th century. The museum was first built to house the works of sculptor Niels Hansen Jacobsen but now has a larger collection with different artists. The museum was super nice however we didn't get to stay very long and I didn't really enjoy it as much as I would have because I was still, ahem, tired from the activities from the night before.

Jelling is a hugely historical place for Denmark because:
1. Jelling is the site where Gorm the Old (Viking) declared himself 1st King of Denmark.
2. Gorm's son, Harold Bluetooth (yes, the bluetooth in cell phones is named after this man) ordered the making/establishment of the Jelling Stones, considered the birth certificate of Denmark.
3. One of these stones is where the name "Denmark" is first written.
4. Jelling is where Christianity was first accepted in Denmark (DK is now a Lutheran country)

After visiting the Jelling stones we had to climb to the top of the HUGE mound where Gorm was originally buried (his remains are now in the town's cathedral) because it is tradition that people climb to the top of the mound and take a shot of some vile Danish liquor in honor of Gorm (note: there may have been people in our class that were just sobering up from the night before). It was a lot of fun though because this mound, like everything else in Denmark, was covered in ice so instead of attempting to walk down the hill (it was also very steep) the entire class slid down the side on our butts, and yes, there are pictures! Then we had lunch at a "Kro" which is a Danish Inn that is known for having traditional Danish food, homey feel, stuff like that. After lunch we headed back to Copenhagen!

We didn't get back to Copenhagen until pretty late so I got home, had leftovers from dinner and then crashed! Today I think I'm just going to hang out at home. Unfortunately the Super Bowl is not on until midnight here so originally my friends and I were going to go to a bar to watch it, but my train home stops running at 12:30! Oh well, someone said the they don't get the good commercials here so I'm not heartbroken!

Museum and Cooking!

Today was another one of my glorious days off so I was able to sleep in (and when I say sleep in, I mean that I still wake up at 8:30 because I get up so early on other days) and then met some friends in Copenhagen to go to the National museum. They had a HUGE exhibit on Amazonian tribes which was pretty cool (we got to lay in real hammocks)!!! We also saw cultural exhibits on countries in Asia and Africa, then a thing on the Renaissance in Denmark (though we didn't finish this exhibit because it was getting late but I'll def. be going back there, bonus: it is free!)

Afterwards we went to the DIS lounge to start making travel plans: most complicated thing in the world! It is SUPER hard to coordinate 6 different schedules plus other random people that will be joining the group at different points in time so we didn't really get very far, but we are working on it!!

When I got home from Copenhagen I started cooking! For dinner I made Caesar chicken-pasta salad and for dessert I made Buckeyes (that's right Ohio crowd, BUCKEYES!) The family said they really liked both things, and they ate a lot so I think it was an overall success!

Tonight I need to do some serious packing because tomorrow morning (at 6:45am no less) I am leaving for Jutland (Peninsular part of Denmark, connected to Germany) where I will be visiting Ribe (oldest city in DK, celebrating its 1,300th birthday this year), the Jelling Stones (considered the "Birth Certificate of Denmark"), and northern Germany (I think we are going to a brewery or something here). I'm pretty excited for my trip, I even have a travel buddy (name: Jeff college: Williams reason for staying in DK: found out yesterday that 7-11 sells 3 kabobs with meat for 20 kr - how can you not like a person who is obsessed with cheap 7-11 meat kabobs!)

I will be gone from Thurs-Sat night so I will not be posting on this glorious blog, but I promise to take lots of pictures and update when I get back!

Hej Hej for now!!!

Food Log:
Breakfast: Toast with jam
Lunch: Fish balls (I am really growing quite fond of the fish balls!)
Snack: St. Peder's cinnamon roll (Wednesdays are cinnamon roll days at the bakery!)
Dinner: Caesar Chicken-Pasta Salad and buckeyes

Oh look, another blizzard...

Yesterday was my day off so I slept in, had a leisurely breakfast, then ran some errands! I had to go back to the Kommune because when I went there to get my CPR card I was supposed to leave with at least my CPR # (I guess like a social security #) but the lady forgot to give it to me so I had to go back and get it so a. DIS could insure me after Feb 15 and b. so I could get a gym membership!

Afterwards, I went to SEVERAL grocery stores to find proper ingredients for the caesar chicken-pasta salad that I am going to make my family, which is A LOT easier said than done! Finally at the 3rd grocery store I found caesar salad dressing and feta cheese so I think I am good. The problem with Danish grocery stores:
1. they are tiny
2. they devote about 9 of 10 aisles to candy, desserts, more candy, etc.
3. apparently people only eat Thousand Island dressing here (bleck!)

I was also looking for ingredients for the different types of candies I can make for my family but 1. pretzels 2. hersey kisses 3. peanut butter chips and 4. spanish peanuts do not exist in Denmark. So, if any of my adoring fans have nothing better to spend their $ on than a care package to me, I would like it to contain pretzel rings, hersey kisses, and more smart wools (socks are not part of any recipe, but always a good idea to have on hand).

After coming home from the store I started all of my homework and worked on Danish until about midnight last night (reminder: I have to be up at 6:15 on school days). So needless to say, this morning was a little hectic but I finally got out the door (for the 2nd time b/c I forgot something the first time I left for the train), ran to the train station, and made it just in time for my class...which of course was cancelled! No email, no post on blackboard, just a sign on the classroom door saying that there was no reason why I had to be in Copenhagen at 8:30 in the morning.

But, after a rocky start my day got better! I started my first class at Copenhagen University, and of course the class is 100% DIS students! Oh well, I met some really nice people in that class so I'm actually really looking forward to it (despite the fact that a. it is going to crush me and b. it is 2.5 hours of philosophy every Tuesday night).

Today we were actually let out a little early from our class though because they are calling for (and now as I type mother nature is delivering) yet ANOTHER blizzard here in lovely Copenhagen. Once again the Danes are beside themselves, and by the time I got home after walking from the train station I had to go into the bathroom and towel off my entire head (including the hair that was under my hat) and am now drying all of the clothes I was wearing! Looks like a quiet night in Værløse for me tonight!
